Are You Ready for National Home Security Month?

Home security with quality Double Glazing in Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch, Hampshire & Dorset

With the darker evenings lengthening; when the sun goes down, burglary figures can go up (by up to 34%).

We’re all guilty of being busy on the treadmill of life and all the demands that are made of us, but we all need to be mindful of keeping our homes safe and secure.

As the clocks ‘fall’ back, they provide a timely annual reminder to ensure that your home is as secure as possible. With the heat of the summer sun during the winter months, it’s important to check if your windows and doors have suffered any damage or wear and tear. Double glazed windows and doors can go out of alignment, seals may need replacing or some general attention.

Allan Tofield of Richmond Home Improvement Co, gives us some pointers of what to look out for:

Technology

“With the wide range of wifi cameras and products available these days, most people have some kind of digital technology in place to protect their home. A working alarm of some sort is a must for every property, and doesn’t need to cost the earth.

“Video doorbells and alarms can be used to only scare trespassers, but will alert the connected control unit to a danger in your home. Make sure they are fully charged (if rechargeable) and are in good working order, to give you piece of mind.

Outside security

“If you’re concerned about your security, an outdoor facing camera is a great deterant. Also, aim a camera facing your main entrance door. Correct placement is critical, and it’s advisable to site them as high as possible to avoid damage.

“It’s important to identify any weak spots in your home,” says Allan. “You should consider all access points and evaluate existing security measures you currently have in place. For example, you should start from the perimeter and work towards your house. Ask yourself, is your fence in good condition? A gravel style path or driveway will also alert you and your neighbours to anyone approaching your home. However, it will also alert you all to errant teenagers who are likely to be coming home late at night!

“Another security breach is leaving a key outside, in case friends or family need access to your house. As many people do this, thieves are always on the lookout for places where keys may be stored, or they may learn of the whereabouts from idle chat. A keysafe, keyless lock (combination) or shared access system via virtual keys from your smartphone could be used instead.

Locks and Handles

Allan says, “homeowners should look for accredited products offering designs that have been vigorously tested to reduce the risk of a breakage.

“It is important to replace broken locks or doors that aren’t as strong as they once were, as this creates another deterrent for a burglar.

“Sometimes burglars actually don’t have to try too hard! Ensure you always lock your windows and doors as they can easily find access through unlocked doors and windows, so be sure to replace yours if they’re not in good shape or locking securely.

Social Media

“Finally, be aware of what you give away on your social media. Be careful when updating your status, uploading pictures which show where you are or letting your friends know when you’re going to be on holiday; if your profile security is not set to private, anyone can access your day to day life when you publish it – not just friends”

Regardless of whether you have a guard dog (or cat!), get checking your social media security settings and your windows and doors. Although Richmond aren’t able to give you much advice on the former, regarding double glazing, they are happy to help!
